Two retired judges were appointed in an ad hoc capacity on Friday by the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP), supposedly to help reduce the backlog of cases that are accumulating at the top court.
Justices Mazhar Alam Miankhel and Sardar Tariq Masood were appointed as ad hoc members of the supreme court for a one-year term, with the appointment accepted at the meeting chaired by Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa on Friday.
A majority vote of 8-1 accepted Justice Masood’s name. On technical grounds, panel member Justice Munib Akhtar objected to his appointment.
Senior Puisne judges Yahya Afridi and Syed Mansoor Ali Shah Munib Akhtar opposed Justice Miankhel’s selection.
