DHAKA (Reuters) – In response to the violent student-led protests that have claimed the lives of at least 114 people, Bangladesh extended a curfew on Sunday. This came as authorities prepared for a Supreme Court hearing later in the day about the government job quotas that had prompted the unrest.
In the heart of the protests that turned into altercations between demonstrators and security personnel, the capital city of Dhaka, soldiers have been on patrol around the streets.
Since Thursday, Bangladesh’s internet and text message services have been unavailable, cutting off the country while authorities crack down on demonstrators who disobeyed a ban on public meetings.
