NAIROBI (Reuters) — Kenyan President William Ruto on Wednesday nominated four members of the largest opposition party to a new “broad-based cabinet,” as promised in response to statewide protests.

The opposition members, notably John Mbadi Ngo’ongo, the nominee to oversee the finance ministry, are supporters of opposition leader Raila Odinga, whom Ruto defeated in the 2022 election.

Young protesters who led six weeks of rallies that persuaded Ruto to reverse $2.7 billion in tax increases had already expressed resistance to a unity government.
