(Reuters) – Firefighters reported that a wind-driven wildfire on a hillside above the city of San Bernardino, California, prompted evacuations and burnt many residences before being contained on Tuesday.
At least five homes have burnt, according to footage from the local TV station KTLA 5, when the swiftly spreading brush fire leaped into upscale mansions with views over the 220,000-person metropolis about 55 miles (88 km) east of Los Angeles.
The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, or CAL FIRE, claimed that the fire started on Monday and burnt 100 acres (40 hectares) before it was mostly contained.
An inquiry was underway to find the fire’s origin.
