(Reuters) – Fearing a worsening of the war in the Middle East, the Canadian government said on Wednesday that it has chosen to remove the children and guardians of its diplomats from Israel, according to the Canadian Press.
Fears of a wider battle in a region already on edge due to Israel’s assault on Gaza, which has left tens of thousands dead and created a humanitarian crisis, including widespread famine, have been heightened by Israel’s tensions with Iran and Hezbollah.
The death of Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr in Beirut and the head of the Palestinian Islamist party Hamas, Ismail Haniyeh, in Iran raised the possibility of an escalation into a wider Middle East conflict and provoked threats against Israel.
