A day after US and Ukrainian officials decided to present the idea to Moscow, the United States said on Wednesday that it was requesting Russia to “unconditionally” consent to a month-long ceasefire in Ukraine.
According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Kyiv had demonstrated that it was prepared to accept the agreement to end the conflict, and the US had threatened to respond “strongly” if the Kremlin rejected it.
Since Russia’s invasion in February 2022, the conflict has raged for three years, with tens of thousands of people slain.
The combined proposal from the United States and Ukraine is the most recent in a string of swift changes in the ceasefire effort.
Less than two weeks have passed since US President Donald Trump removed Zelensky from office and suspended all military assistance and intelligence exchanges with Kyiv.
Following Ukraine’s acceptance of the proposed truce during negotiations in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday, the United States resumed deliveries.
“The United States is now seeking Moscow’s full agreement to the proposal, without attaching any of its own demands,” stated Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
“That’s what we want to know — if they’re prepared to do it unconditionally,” Rubio stated.
“If ‘yes’ is the answer, we know we’ve made progress and that peace is a real possibility. It would be very regrettable and would reveal their objectives if they said “no,” he said.
