President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said Friday’s Russian missile assault on a residential neighborhood of the central Ukrainian city of Kryvyi Rih killed at least 14 people, including six children, making it one of Moscow’s bloodiest attacks this year.
The governor, Serhiy Lysak, said on the Telegram messaging app that the attack on Zelenskiy’s hometown, which coincides with U.S. President Donald Trump’s efforts to stop the war, caused residential blocks to be destroyed and caused fires.
Unverified footage that went viral on Telegram showed the dead and injured laying on the street, one of them near a playground, as gray smoke billowed into the sky.
According to the emergency services, at least 50 individuals were injured, and the number was rising. According to Lysak, around 30 individuals, including a three-month-old infant, were hospitalized.
Zelenskiy urged the West to put more pressure on Moscow and stated that the rescue operation was still ongoing.
The entire globe witnesses it. “Every attack drone and missile demonstrates that Russia is solely interested in war,” he stated on Telegram.
In a first since Trump took office in January, the United States announced last week that it had reached an agreement with Russia and Ukraine to stop attacking each other’s energy infrastructure. Trump had promised to halt the conflict within 24 hours.
Since then, both parties have accused one another of breaking the agreement. Kyiv claims that in separate discussions with U.S. officials, Russia rejected a U.S. request for a complete, unconditional 30-day ceasefire, which it had previously accepted.
“This terror must end, people must be protected, and Russia must be forced to make peace,” Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha stated. According to human rights ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets, Russian soldiers carried out the strike using a ballistic missile.
These missiles may reach their targets in a matter of minutes and are challenging for any but the most advanced air defense systems to shoot down.
“Only civilian infrastructure, not a single military facility,” he continued on Telegram.
Although Russia denies attacking people, their invasion of Ukraine since 2022 has resulted in thousands of deaths and injuries.
At least four individuals were killed when a Russian missile targeted a business in Kryvyi Rih on Wednesday.
