BANGLADESH ELECTION

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party comfortably won 185 seats in Bangladesh’s 300-member parliament, surpassing the halfway point for a simple majority.

DHAKA: The Bangladesh Nationalist Party won a historic parliamentary election on Friday (Feb 13), local TV stations said, as ballots were tallied throughout the night in a key poll anticipated to restore political stability.

The legislative election held on Thursday was Bangladesh’s first since the 2024 Gen Z-led rebellion that deposed long-term Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
A clear decision was viewed as critical for stability in the Muslim-majority nation of 175 million people after months of violent anti-Hasina riots interrupted daily life and hurt important sectors, notably the textile sector in the world’s second biggest exporter.

It was also the first national election held in response to recent revolts led by people under the age of 30 around the area. Nepal is planning to conduct a poll next month.

According to TV broadcasters, the BNP won 185 seats in the 300-member Jatiya Sangsad, or House of the Nation, comfortably reaching the halfway mark for a simple majority.

As counting progressed, BNP officials expressed confidence in capturing 200 seats and a two-thirds majority.Of sure, the BNP is winning, by a landslide,” said Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, a member of the BNP standing committee. “Winning two-thirds of the seats is called a landslide victory, I think we would cross the 200-seat limit.”
Tarique Rahman, the 60-year-old son of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia and former President Ziaur Rahman, leads the BNP as a leading candidate for Prime Minister.

Its campaign pledges included financial assistance for disadvantaged families, a 10-year restriction on an individual’s tenure as prime minister, economic stimulus measures such as foreign investments, and anti-corruption legislation.
