PTI Sindh chapter President Ali Zaidi was arrested by Karachi police on Tuesday as demonstrations erupted in the city after the arrest of PTI Chairman Imran Khan in Islamabad in the Al-Qadir Trust case.
Although the police have not said why Zaidi was detained, a video of the arrest circulating on social media shows cops forcing Zaidi into a white Toyota car in the city’s Kala Pul region.
The PTI leadership has encouraged employees to protest Khan’s detention, and a “emergency committee” — created in the event of his arrest — is slated to determine the next line of action.
Following that, PTI workers protested in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Karachi, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Multan, Peshawar, and Mardan.
Demonstrators battled with police near the Nursery area on Shahrah-e-Faisal in Karachi. They flung stones at police cars, set fire to them, ripped down street lights, and destroyed a bus. According to accounts, police fired tear gas shells at the demonstrators.
Protesters also caused property damage in other cities, including Rawalpindi and Lahore.
Zaidi’s arrest comes only days after he was released from jail on bail in connection with a fraud case after reaching a “out-of-court settlement” with the accuser.
Meanwhile, 23 PTI employees have been detained for protesting in Share a Faisal.
