On humanitarian grounds, Pakistan has freed 198 Indian fishermen who were imprisoned for illegally fishing in Pakistani seas.

The Foreign Office stated in a statement that the released fisherman were handed over to Indian officials at the Wagah border crossing in Lahore.

The fisherman were freed from Karachi’s Malir Jail on Thursday evening and transported to Lahore by rail.

Malir Jail Superintendent Nazir Tunio told the media that the first batch of Indian fisherman convicts had been released, and that more will be released in June and July.

Pakistan was set to release 200 Indian fishermen from Malir prison on Thursday, but two of them died owing to sickness.
