Considering that the deadline for holding polls in Punjab set by the Supreme Court on May 14 has passed on Sunday, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) will ask the court for a review of its April 4 order to hold elections today (Monday).
The review petition from the ECP will be heard by a three-judge panel that is led by Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial and includes Justices Ijazul Ahsan and Munib Akhtar.
Elections for the Punjab Provincial Assembly will go place on May 14 per a ruling by the Supreme court on April 4. Additionally, it had instructed the federal government to allocate Rs 21 billion by April 10 for the elections in the provinces of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and to make all necessary personnel, including members of the armed forces, rangers, and frontier constabulary, available for the security and other needs associated with the general elections.
The electoral watchdog was also required by the court to provide a report on the distribution of cash on April 11. It happened at the same time that the Imran Khan-led party had filed an appeal challenging the election’s delay after the ECP had delayed voting till October 8 due to security and budgetary concerns on March 22.
