ANKARA: Voting in Turkey’s presidential runoff began on Sunday. Tayyip Erdogan might win and continue Turkiye’s increasingly authoritarian course, aggressive foreign policy, and unconventional economic governance.

Erdogan, 69, defied surveys and defeated Kemal Kilicdaroglu in the first round on May 14 with a comfortable lead of about five points. However, in a contest that had significant ramifications for both domestic geopolitics in Turkiye and international geopolitics, he came barely short of the required 50% to avoid a runoff.
