An alleged lease disagreement led Malaysian officials to confiscate a Boeing 777 from Pakistan International Airlines (PIA).
A Malaysian court ordered the seizure of the BMH-registered aircraft due to the non-payment of $4 million. A PIA aircraft has already been intercepted in this manner twice.
After the passengers boarded, an aircraft in 2021 was ordered to land. Pakistan employed diplomatic channels, made good on its promise to pay taxes, and was granted permission. On January 27, the captured aircraft and its 173 occupants—passengers and crew—were returned to Pakistan.
