AFP – KALAMATA Following the migrant boat catastrophe off the coast of Greece, which claimed at least 78 lives, nine Egyptians have been detained on suspicion of being people traffickers, a port source told AFP on Thursday.
The source claimed that the overcrowded and unsafe vessel’s skipper is one of the people being held.
According to the source, the fishing boat departed Egypt empty before loading up with migrants at the Libyan port city of Tobruk and sailing towards Italy.
The Egyptians were detained at the Peloponnese port of Kalamata on suspicion of unlawful human trafficking, according to the Greek news agency ANA. The catastrophe survivors are being looked after in Kalamata.
