The Election Amendment Bill 2023, which limits a parliament’s period of disqualification to a maximum of five years and removes the prohibition against competing for public office again, was adopted by the National Assembly on Sunday.
Section 57 of the Election Act of 2017 was unanimously passed by the House after revisions were proposed by Finance Minister Ishaq Dar. The bill, which was put to a vote by Speaker Raja Pervaiz Ashraf and passed with a majority, was presented.
The amendment stated that the maximum sentence for a crime for which a sentence was not mentioned in the Constitution was a five-year disqualification.
