Due to the recent severe rains and flooding, the Punjab government on Sunday decided to declare a red alert in the state.

Amir Mir, the interim provincial communications minister, said the cabinet discussed the flood situation and noted that because the Bhim dam on the Sutlej river was 70% full and the River Ravi was 90% full, both rivers were at risk of flooding.

He added that Shahdara in the Ravi river was being traversed by a rail of 22,000 cubic seconds and that Delhi was completely under water. He also warned that if India received more rain, Shahdara might follow Delhi in 1988 and become submerged.
