Following days of violence between the military and local militiamen in the Amhara region, Ethiopia’s federal government announced a state of emergency on Friday.

Fighting between the Fano militia and the Ethiopian National Defence Force (ENDF) in Ethiopia’s second-largest province earlier this week has quickly escalated into a serious security issue.

Amhara’s leadership requested further assistance from federal authorities on Thursday in order to restore order.

The announcement of the state of emergency by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s office did not specify if it extended exclusively in Amhara or throughout the country.
