ISLAMABAD – The Supreme Court of Pakistan convened a three-member panel on Monday to hear petitions filed by the PTI chairman challenging the verdict of the Islamabad High Court in the Toshakhana issue.
The case will be heard on August 23 (Wednesday) by a bench led by Chief Justice of Pakistan Umar Ata Bandial and comprised of Justice Mazahar Akbar Naqvi and Justice Jamal Mandokhel.
The former premier has appealed the IHC decision to send the Toshakhana case back to the trial court for a determination on admissibility.
By rejecting its previous ruling, the IHC returned the Toshakhana case against the PTI head to the trial court on August 3 to deliberate on its maintainability.
IHC Chief Justice Aamer Farooq announced the judgment on a series of petitions submitted by the former prime minister disputing the case’s admission, jurisdiction, and other features.
The high court denied the PTI chief’s motion to transfer the matter to another court, ruling that Additional Sessions Judge Humayun Dilawar will continue to hear the case.
The IHC returned the matter to the trial court for a decision on admission for the third time, after the trial court had previously pronounced it maintainable.
Following that, the trial court condemned the former premier to three years in prison for failing to declare the gifts he had received from the state depository in his assets declarations to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).
The PTI head is now serving his sentence in the Attock prison, with pleas to the Supreme Court pending.
