(Web Desk) – A Pakistani doctor was given an 18-year prison term by American authorities for allegedly supporting the violent Islamic State organization, commonly known by the Arabic abbreviation Daesh.

Court records show that Mohammad Masood, 31, was sentenced on Friday.

Masood worked as a research coordinator at a clinic in Rochester, Minnesota before becoming a registered physician in Pakistan.

In order to enable his foreign flight to join a terrorist organization, he allegedly utilized an encrypted chat app between January and March 2020, according to court records.

According to a news release by the US Justice Department, he repeatedly expressed his desire to join the IS organization and swore loyalty to the group and its commander. He also stated his intention to carry out “lone wolf” terrorist strikes against Americans.

The records filed in a federal court state that on February 21, 2020, Dr. Masood bought a ticket from Chicago, Illinois, to Amman, Jordan, with plans to proceed to Syria from there. His vacation plans were altered on March 16, 2020, when Jordan closed its borders to outsiders because of the coronavirus epidemic.

He then made the decision to take a flight from Minneapolis to Los Angeles in order to meet with a person who he thought may help him get a ride on a cargo ship to the IS region.

He traveled from Rochester to Minneapolis on March 19 of that year in order to catch a trip to Los Angeles. When he arrived at the Los Angeles airport, a Joint Terrorism Task Force of the FBI apprehended him.

On August 16, 2022, Dr. Masood admitted to trying to help the group financially. Before Senior Judge Paul A. Magnuson, he was sentenced on August 25.
