ISLAMABAD: According to Geo News, Prime Minister Imran Khan has refused to engage the opposition leader on the nomination of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) head.

The federal Cabinet has already approved the NAB law extending the term of NAB Chairperson Justice (retired) Javed Iqbal.

According to sources, Prime Minister Imran Khan has taken a stand and stated that he would not discuss the leader of the Opposition on the selection of the anti-corruption body.

According to reports, the prime minister told Federal Information and Broadcasting Minister Fawad Chaudhry and Federal Law Minister Farogh Naseem that he would not consult the opposition leader or members.

Barrister Naseem had previously stated on Geo News’ Geo Pakistan that the nomination of the NAB chairman to the federal cabinet has not been discussed. He clarified that Fawad Chaudhry’s remarks referred to a previous meeting.

Later, Naseem claimed, the issue of discussing the NAB chairperson’s appointment with Shehbaz Sharif came up.

It was determined at a high-level conference held by Prime Minister Imran Khan a day earlier that Justice (retd) Javed Iqbal will remain as head of the National Accountability Bureau until a new leader of the anti-graft agency is appointed, according to The News.

Fawad Chaudhry, the Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting, said at a press conference following a cabinet meeting that an ordinance would be introduced on Wednesday (today) to close a legal loophole regarding consultation on the new NAB chairman’s appointment, in case the Speaker of the House or the Opposition faces NAB cases.

It has been agreed that the leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly would be contacted if the administration wishes to award Javed Iqbal another four-year term or select a new chairman.

Because Prime Minister Imran Khan was hesitant to meet directly with Opposition Leader Shehbaz Sharif, it was agreed that, in accordance with NAB legislation, President Arif Alvi would assist the consultation process for the next chairman’s nomination.
