The troubled party is due to undertake intra-party voting on March 3, and Barrister Zafar’s name has been provided by party officials for the chairman position.
ISLAMABAD: Barrister Ali Zafar announced on Saturday evening that he has withdrew his candidacy for the position of PTI chairman.
The struggling party is scheduled to hold intra-party elections on March 3, and Barrister Zafar’s name has been proposed by party officials for the chairman position.
However, the PTI lawyer told The News that he believes he cannot remain the party’s chairman while still working to obtain Imran Khan’s release from jail. According to Zafar, “I believe professionally that while I am working to get Khan Sahib out of jail, if I become the party chairman, there would be a problem. The issue is that my goal as chairman may be to keep him in jail so that my chairmanship may continue. And I don’t want to become involved in such a conflict of interest. Professionally, I believe it is not appropriate.”
When asked if Imran Khan had accepted his recusal from running for chairman, Barrister Zafar said that the PTI founder did.
