PARIS (Reuters): The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) said that Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat was disqualified for failing to make weight only hours before the women’s 50kg freestyle final at the Paris Olympics on Wednesday.
Phogat was scheduled to compete against American Sarah Hildebrandt for the gold medal. She will not be eligible to win a medal of any color due to her disqualification.
“It is with regret that the Indian contingent shares news of the disqualification of Vinesh Phogat from the women’s wrestling 50kg class,” the International Olympic Committee stated in a statement.
“Despite the best efforts by the team through the night, she weighed in a few grams over 50kg this morning.”
