ISLAMABAD: The government of the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) alliance on Saturday declined to call early elections after receiving an offer from former prime minister Imran Khan, saying that “talks don’t come with conditions.”
At a joint news conference with the interior minister, Rana Sanaullah Khan, the opposition Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) party was urged to “sit with us” if it was “serious” and “sincerely” interested in discussions.
Nowhere in the world are talks ever conditional, according to Rafique. He questioned, “On what basis will you have the discussion if you put out your demands first.
After a lengthy political saga in which Shehbaz Sharif assumed the position of prime minister, Khan was dismissed in April. Since then, Khan has called for the country to have elections before the scheduled dates in October 2023, highlighting the dangers the government faces as it seeks a bailout from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
The previous prime minister informed the government that holding early, free, and fair elections was the only option to go ahead from this point. Any alternative course will only result in further political ambiguity and ongoing economic turmoil.
Rafique reiterated that “it’s them [PTI] that need dialogue, not us.” “They begin the discussion of discussions and then avoid even bringing it up. The political process often involves negotiations, and when opposing parties listen to one another, complicated issues may be resolved.
H said that the central government should not be proud of dissolving the provincial assembly in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He stated, “We want the assemblies to finish their constitutional term.
The minister added that conducting discussions with PTI worried their government allies very much. The PDM, according to the party, would ultimately determine whether the government wished to engage in communication. Nevertheless, the administration would speak with PTI in an unofficial capacity.
The interior minister commented on the situation, saying: “He [Khan] attempted to gain a date for the elections by threatening and abusing the institution. He was unable.
After talking to us, he can’t expect to obtain a date from us in a similar way, he stated.
