KARACHI – The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has chosen to back Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) candidate Hafiz Naeemur Rehman in the election for mayor of Karachi.
A spokeswoman for Imran Khan’s party confirmed the news, emphasising the need of fair elections. He also accused the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) of pre-election cheating, alleging that elected local members were being kidnapped by Sindh police.
The PPP had previously avoided local government elections four times, according to the spokeswoman, and they now intended to conduct the mayor election quickly owing to entrenched interests.
The PTI spokeswoman said that elected lawmakers were being kidnapped before to their oath ceremony, and that the party has sought the court over this. He said that the PPP and the MQM-Pakistan refused to acknowledge the people mandate.
Meanwhile, the PPP has endorsed Murtaza Wahab’s candidature for Karachi mayor.
