Pakistan lost three wickets when former captain Babar Azam was still at the bat as the greenshirts pursued New Zealand’s 345-run mark in the first one-day international, which began today in Napier, according to Channel News Pakistan.
Abdullah Shafique was bowled for 36 runs, Usman Khan for 39 runs off 33 balls, and skipper Mohammad Rizwan for 30.
After 30 overs, Pakistan scored 168 runs while losing three wickets.
Mark Chapman hit a brilliant century and Muhammad Abbas supplied record-breaking late pyrotechnics in New Zealand’s inaugural one-day international against Pakistan in Napier on Saturday, scoring 344-9.
Chapman’s career-best 132 laid the groundwork for the imposing team total at McLean Park, as New Zealand fell to 50-3 in the 13th over after being summoned to bat.
Abbas, a Pakistan-born allrounder, sparked the end of the innings with his 52, breaking the Guinness record for the quickest half-century on debut by reaching 50 off the 24th ball he faced.
Pakistan’s seam-heavy attack took advantage of strong bounce and movement early on, but their lead evaporated as Chapman was joined by Daryl Mitchell (76 off 84 balls), and the pair added 199 for the fourth wicket.
Left-hander Chapman was the more aggressive of the two, facing only 111 balls and hitting 13 fours and six sixes.
The 30-year-old was fortunate to survive Salman Agha’s lost catch in the slips when he was on five.
Mitchell’s departure in the 42nd over set off a mini-collapse before 21-year-old Abbas unleashed his stunning innings, which included three fours and three sixes.
All four Pakistani specialist seamers performed well early on but were penalized later.
Left-arm quick Akif Javed had 2-55 on his international debut, but part-time seamer Irfan Khan had the greatest numbers, taking 3-51 from five costly overs at the finish.
Both teams have made several changes from the five-match T20 series, which New Zealand won 4-1.
The visitors welcomed back skipper Mohammad Rizwan and batsman Babar Azam after the key veterans were left out of the T20 series.
Along with Javed, opening batsman Usman Khan and seamer Mohammed Ali are making their ODI debuts for Pakistan.
New Zealand gave Abbas and opening batsman Nick Kelly, who hit 15, their international debuts.
