MANILA, Philippines – A military jet crashed in the southern Philippines on Sunday, killing at least 40 people, according to the army chief. The plane was carrying 85 people, according to media reports.
The Philippine Air Force’s C-130 aircraft had a landing accident on the island of Jolo, the air force stated in a statement.
It stated that “rescue attempts are ongoing.”
Smoke and flames poured from the shattered fuselage, according to a photo posted on Twitter by ABS-CBN News.
According to the AFP news agency, the jet was carrying 85 people, according to the army leader.
At least 40 passengers were rescued from the downed plane and are now being treated, according to armed forces head Cirilito Sobejana.
