In the midst of the changing Afghanistan crisis, a delegation of parliamentary committees receives a briefing from the military.

On Monday, delegations from three parliamentary committees were briefed on the country’s security situation, particularly the situation at the borders and the army’s attempts to maintain peace and stability.

Members of the Senate and National Assembly’s Kashmir and defence committees were among those who visited the GHQ, according to a statement from the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).

The move comes amid the rapidly changing circumstances in Afghanistan, with numerous refugees fleeing the war-torn nation being granted a month of passage in Pakistan.

As the US flew its key diplomats out of Afghanistan in the closing hours of its chaotic retreat, anti-missile defences intercepted rockets launched at Kabul’s airport earlier in the day.

After mounting the largest air evacuation in history, transporting 114,000 of their own countrymen and Afghans who supported them through 20 years of conflict, US soldiers are expected to leave Kabul by Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the lawmakers held an extensive interactive session with the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), General Qamar Javed Bajwa, during the GHQ meeting, according to the military’s media wing.

The Pakistan Armed Forces have achieved unparalleled success in the battle against terrorism and restoring normality to the country, according to COAS.

“Despite obstacles, Pakistan’s borders remain safe, and we are prepared to handle any circumstance,” the army commander added, citing “our prompt actions for Western zone border control.”

In addition to the benefits of regional connectivity, the COAS emphasised the necessity of restoring peace in Afghanistan for the region’s long-term prosperity.

The Pakistan army’s solidarity and commitment to the Kashmir cause and the people of Kashmir was reaffirmed by the COAS.

“The world must understand that peace and security would remain elusive till the Kashmir problem is resolved peacefully,” the army commander said.

According to the military’s media wing, the meeting ended with a commitment to continue the fight against violent extremism through a coordinated, whole-of-nation strategy.

The Parliamentary Committee on National Security had an in-camera meeting in July at Parliament House, with lawmakers expressing satisfaction with the briefing provided by the country’s security system.

The meeting was hosted by National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser and included a briefing from Lieutenant General Faiz Hameed, Director-General of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).
