ISLAMABAD: Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani, Qatar’s Deputy Prime Minister, is expected to arrive in Pakistan today for talks on Afghanistan and other bilateral matters, according to the Foreign Office.

Foreign Minister Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi will meet with Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani, according to the Foreign Office, to discuss the situation in Afghanistan and Pakistan-Qatar ties.

During his tour, the Qatari deputy prime minister will meet with other dignitaries.

Since the fall of Kabul last month, he is the first Gulf FM to visit Pakistan. Several western foreign ministers had come earlier to discuss the developing situation in the war-torn country with Pakistan’s leadership.

Doha has been at the heart of US withdrawal operations, with tens of thousands of Afghans stationed there following the evacuation.

Pakistan and Qatar have close, cordial connections based on shared faith and values, according to the Foreign Office statement.

“On regional and global matters of mutual concern, the two countries work closely together. More than 200,000 industrious Pakistani expats live in Qatar, contributing to both nations’ national growth and economic progress,” according to the statement.

The visit of a Qatari dignitary would provide bilateral relations a boost and improve coordination on critical regional and international problems, according to the statement.
