LAHORE, — The provincial capital of Punjab has been named the world’s second-most polluted city.

According to IQAir, the technological firm that maintains the AirVisual monitoring platform, Lahore had an air quality index of 367, much over the dangerous range of 300.

Gulberg had the poorest air quality, with an AQI of 564, followed by Kot Lakhpat at 563, Davis Road at 513, DHA at 487, Township at 465, Bahria Orchard at 413, Allama Iqbal Town at 422, Punjab University at 475, and Anar Kali Bazar at 416.

Lahore, a busy megacity of more than 11 million people in Punjab province near India’s border, is frequently ranked among the world’s worst cities for air pollution.

Residents have constructed their own air purifiers and sued government officials in frantic attempts to clear the air in recent years, but authorities have been hesitant to act, blaming the haze on India or saying the stats are overstated.
