(Web Desk) – An asteroid three times the size of the Empire State Building is said to be speeding towards Earth at 47,000 miles per hour. On January 18, a one-kilometer-wide space rock will fly near Earth.
According to NASA, the impending asteroid will be the closest to our planet for the next two millennia. Also, any celestial building greater than 140 metres in height might cause widespread devastation if it collides with Erath, as the impact could unleash a massive quantity of energy, equivalent to a thousand atomic bombs. However, it has been noted that the asteroid is not close enough to produce a dangerous scenario.
The space rock is reported to be 1.2 miles from Earth, or five times the distance between the Earth and the Moon.
Meanwhile, NASA has been developing initiatives to deal with similar astronomical catastrophes in the future in order to prevent Earth from colliding.
“We don’t want to be in a scenario where an asteroid is heading toward Earth and then have to test this sort of capability,” said Lindley Johnson, NASA’s planetary defence officer.
