Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky slammed NATO on Friday for ruling out a no-fly zone over the nation, claiming the Western military alliance was aware that further Russian action was imminent.
NATO had earlier Friday rejected Ukraine’s call for a no-fly zone to stop Russia’s bombardment, but Western allies have threatened President Vladimir Putin with more penalties if the war continues.
In a video released by the presidency, Zelensky claimed, “Knowing that additional strikes and deaths are unavoidable, NATO intentionally opted not to block the sky above Ukraine.”
“We think that NATO nations have constructed a narrative that the closure of Ukraine’s airspace would precipitate direct Russian attack against NATO.”
NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg has stated that the alliance will not assist in the crisis due to worries of a direct confrontation with Moscow, which may escalate into a larger conflict.
“The only way to establish a no-fly zone is to send NATO fighter jets into Ukrainian airspace and then shoot down Russian planes,” Stoltenberg stated following the emergency meeting.
“If we do that, we might end up with a full-fledged war in Europe, involving many more nations and generating far more human suffering.”
The NATO meeting, however, was a “weak summit, a confusing summit,” according to Zelensky.
“All of the individuals who die starting today will die as a result of your actions. Because of your frailty, because of your estrangement, “he stated
“Today, the alliance’s leadership gave the go-ahead for more bombing of Ukrainian cities and villages, refusing to establish a no-fly zone.”
