Following weeks of political turmoil, Prime Minister Imran Khan’s fate hangs in the balance as parliament gathers to vote on a no-confidence motion.
No prime minister has ever served a full term, and Khan is facing the most serious challenge to his rule since being elected in 2018, with opponents accusing him of mismanagement of the economy and bungling foreign policy.
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) of Prime Minister Imran Khan effectively lost its majority in the 342-member assembly last week when a coalition partner announced that seven of its lawmakers would vote with the opposition.
More than a dozen PTI lawmakers have also stated their intention to vote no. For the motion to pass, the opposition needs 172 votes.
