The Al Jazeera journalist’s funeral in Jerusalem is marred by violence

After Israeli police disrupted the start of the funeral procession, tens of thousands of mourners filled Jerusalem’s tense Old City on Friday for the burial of veteran Al Jazeera reporter Shireen Abu Akleh.

Pallbearers struggled to keep Abu Akleh’s coffin from tumbling to the ground as baton-wielding police officers surged towards them, seizing Palestinian flags from mourners, according to television footage.

The events left Washington “extremely concerned,” while the European Union was “appalled” by the “unnecessary force.”

According to the Jerusalem Red Crescent, 33 people were hurt during the parade, with six of them being sent to the hospital.

Six arrests were reported by Israeli police. Mourners threw “rocks and glass bottles,” according to a government official.
