QUETTA – The Balochistan High Court (BHC) on Friday ordered the dismissal of all complaints brought against Senator Azam Khan Swati of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) for making defamatory remarks about government institutions.
The PTI stalwart’s son Usman Swati petitioned the BHC, and Justice Hashim Kakar’s decision was made in response. He gave the police the order to drop all five charges brought against the top provincial legislator. Both SSP Investigation Asad Nasir and Mr. Swati’s attorney Naseebullah Tareen were present during the hearing.
After his son filed a lawsuit earlier this week, the high court prohibited police from filing more charges against the PTI leader. The petitioner asked the court to release his father. The senator’s physical remand has also been contested in court by the Insaf Lawyers Forum. A week after the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) detained him in Islamabad in connection with contentious tweets critical of the military, a Quetta district court on Sunday ordered the senator to remain in police detention for five days.
The senator was transferred to Quetta by a special aeroplane on Friday under heavy security after being turned over to the Balochistan police by the judicial magistrate of Islamabad.
