LAHORE – Punjab Governor Balighur Rehman and the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) have been charged with contempt of court for failing to announce the date of the province’s elections.

According to the complaint, the governor and the electoral watchdog disobeyed the court’s order to make the polling location and timetable public by Sunday. According to the constitution, elections must be held within 90 days following the dissolution of the legislature, and the petitioner claims that if the Punjab elections date is not set, a constitutional crisis may result.

The LHC ordered the electoral body to conduct the province’s elections in 90 days on Friday. On a petition by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) asking for a directive to the Punjab governor to promptly declare a date for an election in the province, the LHC Justice Jawad Hassan delivered the reserved decision.

After speaking with the governor of Punjab, who serves as the province’s constitutional head, the court further ordered the ECP to swiftly announce the date for the election of the provincial parliament along with the notice that details the grounds for the decision.

On January 14, 48 hours after Chief Minister Parvez Elahi had asked Punjab Governor Muhammad Baligh-ur-Rehman to dismiss the provincial legislature, the Punjab assembly was dissolved.

According to Punjab Governor Muhammad Balighur Rehman, dissolving the Punjab Assembly was a significant duty that should not be undertaken hastily.
