Biden forgives 150,000 individuals’ college loans, increasing the total to $5 million.

Washington (Reuters): In order to target those who attended institutions that misled students, people with permanent impairments, and public servants, President Joe Biden announced that his government will cancel student debts for almost 150,000 debtors.

More than 5 million Americans have had their college loans forgiven by his administration, according to Biden.

Nearly 85,000 borrowers who attended institutions that “cheated and defrauded their students,” 61,000 borrowers with permanent impairments, and 6,100 public sector employees were among the 150,000 borrowers for whom student debt relief was authorized, according to a statement released by Biden.

The U.S. Education Department said separately on Monday that the Biden administration has announced $183.6 billion in student loan forgiveness over 28 debt reduction initiatives, including Monday’s. It also said that Monday’s assistance totals more than $4.2 billion.

Republicans and courts have obstructed the Biden administration’s attempts to alleviate student debt, a key campaign pledge made by Biden during his 2020 presidential campaign.
