ISLAMABAD: President Dr. Arif Alvi emphasised the PTI-led government’s three-year report card on Monday, with the opposition boycotting the session in protest.
The president addressed the economy at the start of his speech to the joint session of parliament. “Despite the coronavirus, Pakistan’s economy outperformed other countries thanks to the government’s careful measures.”
The opposition began banging benches and causing a commotion in Parliament, prompting the president to respond, “You may make all the noise you want, but you have to face the fact – that the country is moving forward.”
According to the president, the country’s growth rate reached 3.94 percent in 2020-21, exports climbed from $23.7 billion to $25.3 billion, and remittances hit a record $19.4 billion — a $6 billion gain over the previous year.
President Alvi stated that the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) performed admirably, “breaking all prior records,” and became the world’s fourth-best stock market.
According to Alvi, who cited an Overseas Investors Chamber of Commerce and Industry poll, international investors’ faith in the government has grown by 60%. He stated that the Federal Board of Revenue has collected Rs160 more than its objective.
The president stated that the growth in remittances and foreign investment demonstrated that people have faith in the current government.
President Alvi praised the administration for implementing all of the Financial Action Task Force’s (FATF) recommendations and creating legislation to satisfy the criteria.
According to the president, the government’s “digiskills” initiative has benefited up to 1.7 million young people. “This is not a little sum, as Pakistani freelancers have made $2 million in foreign exchange.”
The government is fully aware of the industry’s ever-changing demands. “Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, software development, the internet of things, networking, data analytics, and other technologies will enable us to grow more quickly.”
When it comes to cyber security, he believes Pakistan’s young can play a critical role in the country’s cyber defence.
President Alvi stated that previous governments did not prioritise human development, resulting in poor governance and a “brain drain” in Pakistan.
The president stated that the administration believes that only an educated and healthy Pakistan can progress, and that is why the PTI-led government implemented the Ehsaas law.
“Ehsaas Nashunuma for malnutrition, Waseela-e-Taleem, Ehsaas Kafalat, Ehsaas Scholarship, Ehsaas Emergency Cash, Ehsaas Amdan, Ehsaas Langars, and Ehsaas Koi Bhooka Na Soye focus on human development,” he explained.
The president stated that the government was focused on telemedicine in order to save poor people’s money because they could receive almost the same treatment over the phone.
Speaking on the country’s growing population, he stated that it was becoming more difficult for the government to provide health care, food, transportation, water, and other essentials to the people.
“I feel that we should promote birth spacing and focus on making the family smaller in order to give the best for our children,” Alvi added.
