ISLAMABAD, Pakistan – Prime Minister Imran Khan stated on Sunday that the government will use digital records maintained through cadastral mapping to take action against land mafias and their facilitators.

The prime minister claimed in a series of Tweets on Sunday that when the government began cadastral mapping of Pakistan to digitalize land records, there was enormous opposition, similar to protests against Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs).

He revealed “startling data” from the digitalized property registry, which revealed that the encroached properties included forest land worth Rs 1,869 billion.

“The most stunning statistics to emerge are: 1. The enormous overall value of all encroached state and three main city land – about Rs 5595 billion; 2. The approximate value of encroached forest land – Rs 1869 billion,” he posted on Twitter.

He said that the invasion has exacerbated Pakistan’s already-existing shortage of forest cover.

He said that, like the Electronic Voting Machines, the government encountered “huge pushback” while attempting to digitise Pakistan’s land records through cadastral mapping.

“The results of Phase 1 of the state lands survey demonstrate why there is resistance: extraordinary state land invasion, including forest land, through land mafia-political elite collusion,” he said.

He stated that the government will now take action against the land mafias and their facilitators as a result of this exact digital record.
