MURREE – The authorities cleared major roads in Murree after removing snow on Monday to restore normal traffic flow, but the roads remain slippery, and people have been advised to follow the administration’s and police’s instructions.

Cars stranded on the Kuldana-Barian Road have also been returned to their owners, according to details. During the snowfall, tourists left their vehicles on the roads and went to hotels and camps.

Security personnel are still on the job in various areas of Murree to ensure that tourists have a safe journey. Except for locals, no one is permitted to enter the hill station.

Earlier, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) announced that all major roads in Murree had reopened following a relief operation by the Pakistan Army.

Officials reported that nearly 100,000 visitors in thousands of vehicles had descended on the town by Friday, causing a massive traffic jam even before the blizzard.

They said 23 people died in vehicles stuck in the snow overnight Friday, either from cold or from carbon monoxide poisoning from exhaust fumes produced by drivers running engines to stay warm.

Authorities had promised to conduct an investigation.

“Our first priority was rescue, then relief,” said Hasaan Khawar, spokesman for the Punjab provincial government, in a video posted to his Twitter page on Sunday.

“Thereafter, a high-level investigation will be launched, and if there is any negligence, action will be taken against all those involved.”
