The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) banned Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Senator Faisal Vawda for life on Wednesday for hiding his dual nationality while running for a Karachi seat in the National Assembly during the 2018 General Elections.
A three-member panel led by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja issued a reserved judgement, ordering the PTI politician to repay the salary and other perks he got as a member of the NA (MNA) within two months.
The committee also ruled that Vawda’s vote as MNA in the Senate elections on March 10 was “illegal.” According to ECP, Vawda filed a fraudulent affidavit with his nomination papers.
It should be noted that Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) lawmakers Qadir Khan Mandokhail, Mian Faisal, and Mian Asif Mehmood filed a petition against Vawda, claiming that he is no longer Sadiq and Ameen (truthful and trustworthy) because he concealed his dual citizenship and submitted a false affidavit in the ECP with his nomination papers.
Mandokhail told the journalists after the hearing that he had won the lawsuit after visiting the courts for over four years. The ECP’s order to Vawda to repay any perks he got as a legislator sets a positive precedent, he says.
Faisal Vawda had committed perjury by fraudulently asserting in an oath to the ECP that he did not possess any foreign nationality, according to an investigation report released on January 20.
At the time he filed his nomination papers on June 11, 2018, Vawda had a valid United States passport. The minister was still an American citizen at the time his candidacy papers were being scrutinised, according to the article.
