No MNAs have been arrested, however 19 members of a private militia have been detained: Sheikh Rasheed

ISLAMABAD – Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed, the Minister of Interior, unequivocally disputed the arrest of members of the National Assembly on Thursday, save for 19 of the 50-60 members of the Ansar-ul-Islam private militia who invaded the parliament lodges.

“MNAs have not been arrested; rather, they are being held in police custody for publicity purposes,” he declared at an unscheduled news conference.

According to the minister, no one is allowed to keep a private militia under the constitution. Ansar-ul-Islam activists invaded the Federal lodges and tortured police officers, as well as destroying their cars, he said.

The opposition stormed the lodges, he added, since they were unable to get the requisite number of votes for a no-confidence move against Prime Minister Imran Khan.

He stated that submitting a no-confidence move against the Prime Minister was the opposition’s constitutional and legal prerogative, and that gathering 172 MPs for a no-confidence motion was the opposition’s responsibility.

Violence would not be permitted, he stressed, and offenders would be dealt with harshly.

He said that a five-hour-long dialogue with opposition members had place.
