KABUL, Afghanistan (AFP) – Graham Thorpe, a former England batsman, has been named the new head coach of Afghanistan’s cricket team.
The 52-year-old takes over for ex-South African all-rounder Lance Klusener, who departed by mutual consent in November.
Thorpe’s nomination was announced by the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) on Tuesday.
“Former English middle-order batsman Thorpe has been chosen the new head coach of our national men’s cricket team,” according to an ACB release.
Thorpe was England’s batting coach until he was fired following the team’s 4-0 Ashes loss in Australia.
Thorpe, a brilliant left-handed batsman, batted for England in 100 Test matches from 1987 to 2002, amassing 6744 runs at 44.66 with 16 hundreds.
