Two people familiar with the idea said on Monday that US congressional Democrats agreed to push $39.8 billion in extra aid to Ukraine, assuaging worries that a delayed vote might disrupt the flow of US weaponry to the Kyiv government.
The measure, which exceeds President Joe Biden’s request for $33 billion last month, may be passed by the House of Representatives as early as Tuesday, and Senate leaders indicated they were also ready to act fast.
A request for more COVID-19 financing, which some Democrats sought to combine with the emergency Ukraine funds, will now be addressed independently.
Biden requested Congress for $33 billion in support for Ukraine on April 28, including more than $20 billion in military aid. That plan represented a significant increase in US spending for the conflict with Russia.
According to the sources, the latest plan comprises $3.4 billion in military aid and $3.4 billion in humanitarian aid.
