Finland’s parliament unanimously adopted a proposal to join the NATO military alliance on Tuesday, marking a historic policy shift in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

On Sunday, President Sauli Niinisto and the administration announced that Finland will seek for membership, but the decision was still subject to parliament’s approval.

Speaker Matti Vanhanen said 188 MPs voted in favour of the application and eight voted against it.
