Washington : According to American officials, Pakistan’s procurement of Russian oil is not a problem.

Ned Price, the spokesperson for the State Department, was asked to comment on Russia at a routine press conference because Pakistan, which hasn’t historically been a large consumer of Russian oil, was close to signing an agreement to buy oil from Russia.

According to Mr. Price, the US has no issues if Pakistan wishes to acquire Russian oil. Our strategy for dealing with this has been outlined in the price cap system that we developed in collaboration with other nations, including the G7, he said.

And another benefit of the price limit is that it keeps the energy markets well-supplied while denying Moscow the money it would otherwise need to fund and spread its ruthless campaign on Ukraine.

He said that the US had pointed out that it had not sanctioned Russian oil on purpose. It is now governed by the price cap. So, he said, “we have urged nations to take advantage of it, even those who have not officially endorsed the price restriction, so they can sometimes buy oil at a significant discount from what they would otherwise pay to, in this example, Russia.

He said that the US has been very clear that now is not the moment to step up business with Russia, but that it recognises the need to maintain the world’s energy markets well-resourced and well-supplied, and that the price cap, in our opinion, offers a mechanism to do that.
